童子
early Taisho era /Silk
“Douji” of this title means “a child”. The image of innocent children softening our hearts is one of the popular motifs appearing in the works of Yumeji. The figure of children holding hands under a big camellia tree seems to be Yumeji himself in his childhood. The big camellia tree in the picture was very familiar with Yumeji. That is because there were many camellia trees in Kunishigaoka where he played with his younger sister and friends and also in the village where his mother, Yasuno, was born. Yumeji often loved to draw round camellia flowers. This work "Douji" shows how children enjoy playing around the big red flowers. It is filled with memories of his hometown that he valued throughout his life.
